Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (aka PCOS)

What is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome ?

PCOS is a complex hormone condition common in women. Imbalances in hormones can cause women to experience skin and hair changes, disruptions to the menstrual cycle, weight gain, as well as cysts on the ovaries. PCOS increases the chances of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart problems, and endometrial cancer.

What causes PCOS?

Although the cause of PCOS is still unknown, family history and genetics, hormones and lifestyle do play a role. Women who have a relative with PCOS are 50% more likely to develop PCOS. The condition is also more common in women of Asian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and African backgrounds.

Why is it important ?

PCOS affects 1 in 10 women of reproductive age and is the most common cause of infertility. Despite this, 70% of women with PCOS are not properly diagnosed and many women with PCOS remain undiagnosed. Although PCOS cannot be cured, early diagnosis and treatment can help reduce and manage the risk of long-term complications - allowing most women to lead a normal life.
